So after 22 years the Spring Auto tensioner on my '95 gave up the ghost, brand new gates belt and was still squealing every time the ac engaged.
My XJ has e-fans and a mech fan pulley delete.
Go jeep has a write up on how to do it, its a worth while read, but in the end he used a random high current alternator that took fab skills to make fit.
http://gojeep.willyshotrod.com/HowtoBeltTensioner.htm

I used the stock XJ 90 amp alt, with 2 smooth ideler pulleys from a ZJ and the ZJ bracket. It all just bolts up. a 6pk2350 belt, with landrover, gm and ford applications fits, off the shelf at the local parts shop, with plenty adjustment both ways.
**note normally the bracket comes with a smooth and ribbed ideler pulleys. this solution uses 2 smooth ZJ/ XJ 96+pulleys. The stock '95 smooth is to big (diameter) to work.
I believe the zj and OBD2 xj brackets & alternator set up are the same but do not know for sure.

had an amusing day recently in my XJ, which I may update later,
but in the meanwhile, am thinking of locating this older ARB compressor in the pictured location, behind spare wheel.

my rationale is it wont take up any additional space in cabin, or inhibit spare wheel usage, prefer not engine bay

I am concerned of noise,,,its use will be to (very rarely) re-inflate tyres from ~18 to ~30psi after beach use, and to power my (not yet fitted) ARB rear diff-lock, which would only be engaged very rarely when off-roading

speak now or forever hold yr piece

Perhaps look at the cavity between the wheel and the side panel, this would deaden the noise and with the correct plumbing the spare can be used as an air reservoir
