Rego time for the trailer. Since I store it down the back of the yard, and was by myself, I figured I'd use the winch to pull it up to check it over & clean it up before taking it up for inspection next week. Pulled a bit of rope out & checked the operation before doing anything else... Nothing.
I could hear a relay clicking but no movement when using the wireless controller. Got the multimeter & checked the winch connections for power & couldn't find any. Tried the wired controller instead of the wireless & nothing at all. Tried the wireless again, no sound at all now. Figured ther will be power on one of the pins where the controller plugs in so checked all 3 and none of them even had power now. (Some of you will already see what is happening here...)
That was yesterday. Today I pulled the winch & controller out. After the last trip that involved a water crossing, I opened the relay & sprayed the connections with a terminal sealant & sealed all the openings with silicon (electrical). That was several years ago, though. I also stripped & regreased the winch motor & gearbox. They have worked perfectly the few times I have used them since. So the only water they have seen since then has been weather and whatever got splashed up by puddles when it's been wet.
I opened the relay again to check it & see if there was anything to be done... So much for sealing it up! Also explains how the connector pin corroded & got pulled out when I removed the controller! Yes there should be 4 pins & the power pin was the one that was pulled out when I removed the connector.
So for everyone with a winch, even if you aren't fording water at all, it might be worthwhile to check it regularly! Before it ends up like mine.
I think the winch & rope are ok, though...
