I will do a bit of a write up on some aspects of the job once complete that may be helpful to others in the future

Interestingly, both trans had paint pen markings on the top of the bellhousing, which I normally associate with wreckers, suggesting both have been swapped out before

trans is back in, this time it isnt leaking oil, following replacement of this seal,

the bolts in the pic are longer than original, and they help a lot to guide the trans home, also replaced the E12 with standard hex head

I test drove it before, so I know it worked, but the test was bought to a premature end when it spat the cooler line

have had to source new clips that retain the cooler lines because the 25yr old plastic ones shattered into pieces upon removal...a tiny piece of the old clip seems to be what caused the pipe to come out, so I have rectified that, keeping my fingers crossed

It goes in reverse and forward, and doesnt leak oil, and I will be testing it out locally over the next few days

If it behaves for a while, I will do a write-up for changing out AW4,
a few things I found out that might help, was quite a lot quicker 2nd time around, but its a big job

Well done Tony,
Good job on getting it done.
A write up would be good on the AW4. I did a service on mine a while back, and it looked great inside, but it getting long in the tooth. One day it might need a rebuild!!
Hope yours all works great during trials. Its good fun keeping these old birds on the road. Mine is purring like a kitten at the moment.

Cheers,

Cheers,
Round 3

So after test driving, it became apparent that although I had all 4 gears,
it was not auto shifting the same as my old one, and it turns out it was jumping from 1st to 4th if started in Drive

Meaning Solenoid 2 has failed.

Verified by measuring from the 7 pin connector that goes down next to the dipstick

Remove solenoid from old trans, drop pan, and swap them over

another 4 litres of fresh trans fluid, and its shifting as it should now

Its suprisingly not obvious, I was trying to fool myself it might be a
cable adjustment, but in my heart, I knew 2nd seemed missing, and it would feel lacking in power, due to sliding from 1st to 4th

At least your able to diagnose and swap parts around to suit.
Great that its all running well again.
Would of cost a fortune at a transmission shop. I dont think you can walk out of those places without a 2-3k bill.

Cheers,
