Thanks for all that Jungle Juice.
The WA Transport Dept has asked for a pre and post height to roof measurement.. that is why i have been trying to documented info. Anyway, i did some research and came up with the definitive height taken from the roof racks for most Sport, Classic and Limited XJ's in Australia.

http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/rvd-pre1999/ lists the XJ height (from roof rack to ground) as: Sport and Classic: 1730mm and Limited: 1693mm. This explains the extra 1" for Sport and Classic models due to the Upcountry/Offroad suspension group. To back up these measurements, my Australian XJ owners manual lists the roof height as 1623mm (no roof rack) which is 64 inches. The roof rack is 2.75 inches which is 70mm. Add the 70mm to the roof height and you get 1693mm. To confirm these dimensions, JeepHorizons.com and Eric Zappe's Jeep Builders Guide Book both list the XJ height as 66.8 inches with roof rack. This is roughly 1693mm. The US models only had the Upcountry suspension as an option but we got the Sport and Classic springs which gave the extra lift to 1730mm.

Therefor, due to most Australian XJ's with trim level Sport and Classic having a roof rack height of 1730mm, i hope to be able to add 40mm to this with a suspension lift and 10mm with tyres to give an overall roof rack height of 1780mm. The engineer i employ has to inspect a variety of modifications on my XJ and i am hoping he inspects the modifications to the tyres and suspension, approves the lift to 1780mm (87mm lift for Limited suspension)(50mm lift for Sport and Classic) and i wont need a lane change test/engineering.

I have had a look at the ADR's for lights, and i believe my Protofab rear tyre carrier should be approved if i fit lights to it so that they can be seen at a 45 degree angle from the rear.

Slowly but surely i am working my way through getting the old girl into spec for engineering and licensing.

Below is a couple of pics of the Old Girl when i got the defect notice. She had a 6" lift, 35" tyres, 4.88 gears with ARB lockers, Protofab tyre carrier, Bushwacker flares, Acos, sunroof fitted, etc.. etc..

For the rear lights to be ADR legal, the euro E mark is acceptable, US spec DOT is not. Should be able to find something LED on eBay with e mark or ADR approved or likely anything from say Narva or Hella sold in Australian chain stores should be fine as well. Need to have the markings on the lenses.

Thanks DarkSide. I was limited in my selection of LED tail lights due to the design of the Protofab rear carrier requiring a slim line style. I have found some LED tail/brake/reverse/indicator lights that are ADR approved. They can be found here http://www.actionauto.com.au/200bstirmb.html and various other places, including Ebay. Made by LED Autolamps and are quite dear compared to the cheap Ebay ones at about $130 delivered. I will fit and wire them up, and hopefully the carrier should then be approved.

Had a look at that one Del, but does not seem to have inbuilt reverse lights. Looks good, but i can only see it as a 3 in 1 design and not a 4 in 1.
Do you have any pics of your setup?
Cheers,

I put these hella ones in to keep mine legal when I had it. Changed all the lights in the US taillights (red no amber) to act as brake lights. I didn't think there was a requirement to see the reversing lights like the indicators and brake lights.

Cheers
Steve

Thanks Steve, they look good in there and you would be able to see them on the 45 degree angle. I am not sure on the reversing light thing, but as mine is unregistered and needs to pass engineering and pits, i am getting a whole set of lights that can be visible at 45, just to stop any arguments.

On a side note, i picked a the front and rear springs and original roof racks from a 1996 Sport.
I fitted the rear roof rack so i can use it as a measuring reference point for my height..see previous posts.

The front springs have part number:GL 5200 1794 which show up on the net as upcountry springs as all the Oz Sports and Classics had.
The rear leafs are part number PRN 390 1066 which i cant find anything on but they are off the same 95 Sport.
I measured the arch at about 170mm from a line across the eyes to the top of spring where pin is. These leaves also came with the original shackles and the whole lot is in very good condition.

So, tomorrow, i will fit everything up and check heights, caster etc.. I am thinking that i will need to add a leaf to the pack to give me the extra 40mm suspension lift i am after over the Sport height (10mm is in the 235 tyres).

I am looking at the Rancho RS60913 add a leaf. Its a lot of messing around but i want to go as tall as i can (Sport 1730 + 50mm). The front i can balance out using my ACOS.

Pics to come of whole process....
