Default Chasing the rumble and diff operation

Been chasing a rumbling noise that sounds like its coming from the rear, so far I've replaced the CV on the front driveshaft (its seal had perished and spewed grease everywhere).

I decided to drop the fluid from the transfer case (eeeeew). Didnt find that there was any metal particles in it that I could see (in the sunlight) but definitely looks like I've inhaled both some water and dust I suspect.

Then dropped the rear diff fluid which was better but appears to have been slightly contaminated too, with lots of clutch material in the oil which was a surprise after ~10,000kms.

Since I had the cover off I thought I'd poke around to see how much play everything has and discovered two interesting things, first was the amount of oil that bypasses the seal on the QD2 solenoid (perhaps by design) was surprising and second the slack that appears to be in the spider gears.

A interesting note on the QD2 operation, you can see here it engaging and disengaging as I slowly dig myself a hole, not sure if its by design, but events like this always cause the clutch performance codes to be flagged in the FDCM.

You sure that's Quadra Drive and not Quadra Trac? My QD2 system seems to lock everything up and sends so much drive to all 4 wheels it is a bitch to steer at speed.

I would like to try that experiment you did, but finding that much water and mud isn't going to be easy around me!

Good point it really isn't the expected behavior from QD2, but I'm sure its Quadradrive, I've had both diffs covers off and they've got the solenoid, pump and clutch assembly in there. What I'm suspecting is that the clutches are cooked or I've got some other gremlins that prevent 100% lock from being delivered.
They do provide some lock as I dont suffer issues when opposite corners get airborn like when crossing ruts and climbing out of creek crossings so I'm at a loss as to why in times like the video above it wont provide 100% lock.

Yep something is up with your front diff, check the wiring back to the FDCM under the back seat but I feel its the clutch packs as you don't get codes saying open or short circuit.

Could possibly be the solenoid as you mention how much oil was inside it.

Its not so much oil in the solenoid, from what I can tell in its normal state the solenoid lets the oil from the pump vent back into the case when its not engaged. I've not had any connection based codes to do with the solenoids (high or low) but I'll chuck the multi meter on them and see if they are working as expected. I wonder if they could actually be gummed up and as such not providing good flow to the clutch packs when activated.

FYI - The rear shows the same behavior as the front, just not shown well in that video.

Could the original cause be the wrong oil put in, glazing the clutch plates?
