Yep, true, 95% of cars this old are all ticking time bombs, but diesels like this platform are ticking nuclear time bombs. Whole other level of kaboom.
My 2.7 CRD has done 225,000km now and is running very well and looks like it will stay this way for another 100,000km.

However, it has cost a small fortune in parts to get it this way, plus a heap of time and effort.

Fortunately I can do the work myself, if I couldn't it would have been cheaper to dump the car as labour costs would have made diagnosis and repair very expensive.

A thirsty petrol is more economical IMHO than a common rail diesel in the long run. Even a vehicle in warranty can get very expensive to repair if you pick up some dirty fuel. A good dose of water in the system could easily cost $10k if you are unlucky, that money would buy a shed load of petrol.

I'm consistently getting around 20lt/100kms. Driving like a grandma u might get a little under this, but doubt you'd see much under 18.

Yeah I thought of possibly upgrading to LPG, but again for the cost of getting a quality setup installed, you're going to want to have the car for a long time and do lot's of kms to pay it off.

I've decided the pleasure is worth the price

Bit of an update to this. Since I changed out all the O2 sensors, I'm now seeing pretty consistent 16's on the HUD.

Should have changed the bloody things sooner lol

Since I cut out the suitcase exhaust, changed plugs and general consumables I see a consistent 13 - 14 and I tend not to pussy foot around, mostly short trips during the week too, under 15 minutes.
I did over 750 k's last weekend, just under 300 of that on sand and giving it lots of balls on the hills of the Border Track and it turned up at 13.8 for the whole trip, way less than my mates 4 cyl Hilux and only a hair more than my mates new TD Prado.
