Fuel - Cherokee 4.0 Vs Grand 4.7

It will be traveling mainly hwy 100km driving. Not to worried about the difference in off-road consumption (I can imagine it will be just as heavy). I am only doing light 4wding these days, more taking the kids camping than trying to climb Everest.

I had a 4.7 v8 and now have a 4 ltr 6 - both 99 WJ GC - both were geared the same - just under 1500 revs for 80 kph and 2000 for around 100 kph - same tyre sizes

the v8 had more power but the 6 is quite adequate and moves off from stop really well and for mine handles way better - vg road holding stopping and cornering - the v8 seemed front-end heavy and wallowy in comparison - not good

and as for fuel consumption the v8 is good only if you are really light on the throttle and drinks badly in traffic - the 6 is slightly more 'economical' in traffic and the freeway but about the same as the v8 if pushed along or loaded up

but the 6 is just so easy to maintain - everything important is easily accessible and this is a big plus if you do your own maintenace as is the fact there are less things to replace go wrong eg plugs . coils etc

Mine was around the 10-11l/100km on the highway in standard form. Went up to about 13-14 with lift and bigger more aggressive tyres. Averages now around 17 both highway and town on LPG injection. (Earlier figures were petrol)

I have a 2 in lift, alloy bullbar, dual batteries, radio, fridge, 9 in driving lights,amplifier, 255/70/17 and a few other nic knacks. 4 l engine with 250k km on the clock mainly 100-110km/h driving for 14.5 lp 100 and weighs in at 2150 kg

My 99 4.0L gets around the 12L per 100 on semi flat open roads but throw in any mountains and watch it go up.
I am using mainly as a tow tug at the moment, 16.6" poptop traveling Australia, and get around 17/18L per 100.
The only mods that might affect fuel I've done are a roofrack and 245/75/16 Hankook atm tyres.
All this equates to roughly 550 klms when not towing and around roughly 300 to 350 klms when towing per tank.
Using for towing I think I should have gone the v8.
