You won't always know if my experience is anything to go by. Mine was leaking out of the the HP pump and would still start without any problems. It was sucking air and would idle very roughly for the first few K's until the air disappeared. Would also idle roughly if stopped while going up a steep hill, and I reckon it contributed to some fuel rail over pressure codes when pushed hard.
Now I reckon I've got a problematic EGR valve,
