Yep, true, 95% of cars this old are all ticking time bombs, but diesels like this platform are ticking nuclear time bombs. Whole other level of kaboom.

My 2.7 CRD has done 225,000km now and is running very well and looks like it will stay this way for another 100,000km.
However, it has cost a small fortune in parts to get it this way, plus a heap of time and effort.
Fortunately I can do the work myself, if I couldn't it would have been cheaper to dump the car as labour costs would have made diagnosis and repair very expensive.
A thirsty petrol is more economical IMHO than a common rail diesel in the long run. Even a vehicle in warranty can get very expensive to repair if you pick up some dirty fuel. A good dose of water in the system could easily cost $10k if you are unlucky, that money would buy a shed load of petrol.
