Mine's a Diesel and does the same when coasting down through the gears. Its like double clutching in a truck. Perhaps its designed like that for smother gear changes. I wonder about extra ware on brakes though.

There's a video going around of a guy that explains the whole transmission. There are two dog clutches involved and no syncros like a traditional auto so revs need to be raised to allow the dog clutches to engage.

Quite an interesting design when you get into it.

At the risk of showing my age - Autos have syncros and dogs now ? I thought they had planetary gears and bands.....1964 Fordomatic did anyhow....

If they do have syncros and dogs, just give me a 3rd pedal and I'll do it myself.
