At least your tailgate wont rust eksjay, as they had the good idea of making them from fiberglass.
Where are you getting your seals? I will be needing some soon too.
My 1995 has also done around 325-345k mark and should be good for another 24 years as well. They seem to get better as they get older.

Once i get my XJ into daily driver mode AWG, i will look at the fuel mileage again. I did work it out before but can't remember. Its getting regeared to 4.56 with the 33's. Wonder how far my 125 liter tank will carry me?

Cheers,

I think our cars must be kindred spirits.... They probably rolled off the assembly line at the same time and were put on the same boat.

I saw the seals on a couple of websites. IIRC, quadratec and rockauto. Probably a few on eBay too.

My seals are surprisingly in good condition with a small tear at the tailgate. There is no sign of dust or exhaust gases getting into the cabin.

Yes, much agreed about the fibreglass tailgate. The metal ones can crumble away if not kept under constant watch.

Without a doubtl, barring any accident or w/o, this car will outlive my 2016 JKU v6 - although I have seen some YouTube videos where it too can be very forgiving.

I have turned my XJ into a long range tourer again after it started it's life this way and continued for the first 5 years of ownership. After this, we used it as a DD for a few years before returning it to the tracks. The kids love it.

Who keeps cars for 25 years?

so are XJ oil fill caps idiot proof or something?

have more trouble getting them off than a schoolgirls bra (when I was a schoolboy!)

so today, go to change oil, the sob is jammed, wedge it up with a screwdriver, and I hear a crack

there is a spring in the centre plastic...bust that and the inner plastic out (already done on mine).

now you will have the inner black cone, that screws into the hole, and the outer cap.

clean them, pop them back together, and glue them together

now you have an oil cap that just screws in or out

The OEM (and probably any) oil fill caps are always tighter when the engine is hot. If you are going to warm the engine before draining oil, the trick is to loosen the cap when the engine is cold.
