05. Radio issues
Hi all, we recently bought a 05 KJ CRD and are very happy with it, but a couple of days ago the radio started to have occasional dropouts, it affects all aspects of the radio and I’m wondering if this is a common fault.
It’s the OEM radio, similar of course to that fitted to my WG but I’ve never come across this before.
Thanks,
Doug.

I've not heard of any issues myself, When you say "all aspects" do you mean it loses power, or sound drops out, or radio reception lost???
Could be the plug at the back a little loose, it's pretty easy to get the radio out, small screw down the very bottom of the panel surround , either beside the 12vt socket or in that area, then the panel pulls outward watch out for all those air lines attached to the airconditioning controls . the radio is then easily removed, 4 screws and then it slides out. It has one plug in the back and the antenna socket.
Also , if its a power thing, could be a faulty fuse, or it's a bit unseated in the fuse holder??? or a bit of corrosion built up from time?? Could be an idea to just replace the fuse and see if that helps.

Thanks for your response, the first thing I ruled out was power, it doesn’t lose power as such, the screen remains functional etc, it’s just that the sound stops, this can be for between 0.5 to 4 seconds, random timing, not related to passing over bumps, acceleration, or braking. This leads me to the conclusion it’s not power related, so, where next?
Well it is also not temperature related, it does it when hot, cold, or in between so I’m guessing now that the radio is just plain faulty, possibly a failing capacitor in the output stage as it affects radio and CD output.
Thanks for the brief write up on how to remove the radio, saves me reading the manual, I’ll start trolling for a radio to suit. [emoji853]

There are a few aftermarket ones around, I just pulled out a Kenwood one from the KJ I just bought, and put in an original one.
I do have a spare original one, from a 2003 model, same as the one I have now (an 04 ) in my 2006 KJ...........I was holding onto it as a spare, just incase backup, there are a few around in wreckers, I was actually looking around to see if I can get one out of a " Limited" along with the steering wheels controls.
See how you go finding one around town, I see you are Brissy Southside, quite a few wreckers Southside with KJ's
If you have no luck, I maybe swayed to let the spare unit go, Of course the aftermarket unit, you are quite welcome to.

Will chat to you about that soon.
While we are talking radios, here is the one fitted to ours. I really shouldn’t call it mine, I bought it for my wife, I have 2 WJ’s to play with lol.

And I gather this is a UConnect module?

ahhhhhhhh......!
I see that handsfree unit, Could be a problem with it connecting to a device and overriding playback for a moment. Either the phone connected, maybe something to do with voice detection, hearing a voice and cutting the radio, or a faulty bit of wirung there.
I ripped the handsfree out of mine, I don't think it was working anyway, but could be something to look at.
The ones I have look the same as far as the radio goes, but also have a cassette player in there as well as the CD player, I'm 99.999% sure the opening for them is all the same.
