Default M5 powered off roader

I still can't find anyone that's done a BMW engine swap into a Willys Jeep but I found someone who put an S38B36 M5 engine into a 4WD VW Golf

I'd like to see how they waterproofed it. This is one of the last engines I would expect to see being used off road.

They are a torquey 6 cylinder which the factory brochure says can do 7k rpm continuous

Came for the M power sound, left disappointed after hearing that.

Default Engine out

The BMW donor engine is out and on the stand

The M40B18 is 600mm wide from the air-conditioning compressor to the opposite edge of the sump.

The width inside the chassis rails is 667mm by my tape measure.

The sump is offset to the left which is good as it will allow clearance of the front driveshaft but it's going to be close so like the original installation the engine will require an offset to the LHS of the chassis.

If I can get away with keeping the air-conditioning compressor I will use it as an air compressor. If there isn't enough room it will be removed.

Flywheel is thick and heavy.

I'm looking at the clutch and pressure plate issues today.

Engine being degreased and cleaned.

Good view of the sump layout

Standard alternator is 105 amps , it will be changed for a 150 amp unit that I have in the workshop from a BMW 750 I broke down for parts.

I thought these little shock absorbers on the engine mounts were a good idea to dampen the vibration of the I4

Hadn't seen those little shocks before. Only the oil filled mounts like on the V6 Commodores.
