Default JK Command Trac/BLD v JL Selec-Trac

What's the difference?

Can somebody please explain?

Select Trac typically has full time 4wd mode. Command Trac is part time 4wd mode only - i.e. you cannot drive it on paved roads in 4wd without doing some serious damage.

TJs and JKs are part time systems meaning that in normal 2wd mode they are rear wheel drive, and not 4wd (or AWD).

Xj's & KJ's had the select trac transfer case as well which has a centre differential that can be locked for loose surfaces or unlocked for on road. Like mentioned the JK & TJ dont have the centre diff so are either 2WD or locked 50/50 front to rear for loose offroad surfaces.

I have a selec-trac XJ and I am familiar with it.

However, jeep.com describes the Selec-trac on the JL as kicking in the full time 4wd when wheel slippage is detected in one of the wheels on paved roads. Isn't that what the BLD already does in the JK? If I leave my XJ transfer case lever in full time 4wd, the system is always on. Given that the system is not always on in the JL, it sounds like BLD ... unless it is more like the ZJ transfer case system...

Apologies eksjay, didn't notice the user name before I posted and that you've been around along time on the XJ section like me.

It sounds to be similar to the KK Cherokee as it too has an auto setting that kicks in the fronts when slip is detected.

Hey Big Dave, I also own a JKU now...

... was unsure if the JL is using the same trickery with the BLD, and and Jeep marketing has decided to now call it selec-trac, or it is one of those systems that truly does the 48/52 thing when required...

BLD does nothing to transfer power from the rear wheels to front wheels (JK is effectively a 100% rear wheel drive, unless you pull on the lever and put it in 4H or 4L).

Select Trac is an AWD system that allows for on road use. I believe it's the same transfer case as in Liberty (KJ). The MP3022 transfer case uses an electronically controlled clutch pack to bias torque from 100% rear to 50/50% front/rear. The transfer case has no center differential, so power can only be supplied to the front axle when the rear wheels begin to slip.

It's kind of what WJ does but with viscous coupler thingy in the transfer case.

For JL this is an option on 4 door models, not on 2 door ones. I guess short wheelbase is too twitchy for it.
