I remember them from a long time ago bruggz, can't rival Methusela yet, but working on it. Think they got brittle from heat & fell to bits after a few years, probably made of better stuff now.
[emoji33] Fair dinkum. Well, being made of plastic, what do you expect. I think there was an alloy one there, somewhere. Would maybe be a better prospect?.
I've never used one, personally.

And for closure....this ended up being a blocked radiator.

I would like to extended warm thanks to the Natrad Radiator Franchisee on Parramatta Rd at Granville NSW for ruthlessly ripping me off and giving me the bum steer of the decade, causing me much wasted time and effort along with my $200. I will be going back to discuss this with him as soon as I find the time....and report back on the outcome.

Thank you all for your responses.

I did end up buying and installing one of the $160 ebay aluminium jobbies.

The fan shrowd mod ended up being fairly painless and simple. I cut off the original tabs and rivetted them to an aluminium strap in the correct positions. You don't need to, but I also took it to a shop to have the tabs welded and the strap welded to the bottom of the rad.
