Yep, that was the second option for me. But I like more the "clean" style. When I find a bolt to close the exhaust pipe I'll remove that one also
Cut the pipe off about 3/4" above the exhaust fitting & weld an EGT sensor fitting in the stub of the pipe.

mines blocked between egr and manifold little bit smokier when you pull away from lights but you loose the flat spot at 1800 rpm

If you do remove the pump, please let us know what happens.

So, removing the vacuum pump "turns on" the limp mode. Engine doesn't run over 2000rpm, no faults on the dash. Plugged in again, immediately the xj drove as usual
I took the time today to check it, to remove the plug you have first to unscrew the vacuum pump from the support plate, otherwise there's not enough room.
I wanted also to replace the glow plugs, but the bay shop sent me the wrong ones...so that will be postponed

I thought the vac pump disco would cause limp.
If you are in Australia, summer now, dont worry about GP's for now unless you have a dead one with high resistance or open circuit when tested in place. When the weather cools, think about replacing any that fail. They are not like spark plugs that all need replacing.

I'm about as far as you can imagine in the North hemisphere, I'm in Norway
I bought these glow plugs few months ago and only when attempted to replace them I saw they were wrong. Cheap replacement anyway, so I don't mind.
New ones should be here in few days
Here is a pic of how can be the winter season here

I thought you were up that way. Hence my dumb comment.
If your GP's are all testing around 0.8 ohms, best leave them alone. Carry spares & a long reach socket just in case 1 fails. You dont know how good the new ones are. A case of "if its not broke, dont try & fix it".
