Go read up on the BMW i8's system, selectable modes.
There is also a system that used a beefed up starter motor to drive by the flywheel..
Many different ways to implement 'Hybrid'

Mitsubishi already make the Overland in a hybrid and it kills the Jeep patriot and Compass in every way and even has regenerative braking.
Something along the lines of a small petrol motor only used to power the batteries for the electrical drive system would be great, endless range for bugger all fuel.
Obviously you wouldn't do a river crossing with it but as far as a soft roader goes it wouldn't be bad.

My thought would be that they would go the Maclaren P1 route. Full electric with petrol as a generator only to charge your batteries. Full torque 24/7. This is the best way forward for hybrid.

You're not interested in all the engine's torque available from the moment you put down your foot, rather than having the rev the hell out of the thing to get it into the sweet spot? I would love that for offroading myself.
Also, IC engines are pretty awful at being efficient. You're looking at, what, 35% efficiency? The rest of it is turned into heat and noise. Electric motors are much better, with Tesla achieving about 85%, last time I checked. They're also stupidly fast, and have proven reliable, so far.
Biggest downer on electric for me, other than hearing a nice engine note and abysmal range on plug-ins is that the automatic brigade will have won with their awful 'take all the fun out of driving and now my left foot has atrophied' transmissions.
(note - my opinion on autotragics is just that - my opinion. I appreciate and respect that others will differ, however wrong they may be )

Any one who lives in the city will think a hybrid is great. Just remember the battery will go flat & the IC engine then does the work & they usually have shit IC engines. & then there is the extra weight of the batteries.
I hear there are many pirus's running around with stuffed batteries, too expensive to replace. just a heavy gutless inefficient POS.
I notice MB have small diesels that kill a pirus for economy. I agree that diesel electric as an alternate to a transmission may eventually be the way to go. Freight trains have done that for a very long time. A elec motor in each wheel hub may be an interesting plan.
My comment about taking the kids to school still stands.
If hybrids were that good, they would have been in use for years.
Interestingly back in the 1960's electric drives were used much more in high torque, low speed drive applications, elevator drives for scrapers is one that comes to mind. That has been surpassed with hydraulic drives.
Any one who talks of some hybrid being better that a patriot or compass is just talking about soccer moms & dads bragging rights at social occasions ~ Chardonnay socialists.
If hybrids were so good they would be everywhere in custom builds.
