I have the old 4-Rib ATZ's on my JKU (285/70/17's) on stock rims and they've been great. Good grip on road and off, good wear (still going strong at 75000km) and not too noisy. Only a little rubbing on the sway bar end but that was easily fixed. If you have a lift with flexi coils that allow a lot of articulation then you might also want to check the alignment of the front axle as well. I had to make sure mine was dead centre to stop the tyres hitting the top of the coil towers when flexing.

The updated version of the ATZ's are the P3's. I think the tread pattern is equally as aggressive as the old ATZ's but the side biters aren't as aggressive and they are now E load rated instead of D (so stiffer side walls). Not heard any bad reports about them though.

No lift as yet, bigger tyres and lift may give me clearance issues at home. I've seen people say 33s will fit sans lift, can anyone confirm?

33's will fit without a lift.
You'll just need to check rubbing on the sway bar which is usually minimal and easy to fix if you do get it.
Also check for rubbing under the guards when flexing and if it's bad you'll need to either increase your bump stops accordingly (cheap option) or get new flat flares which usually have more clearance (not so cheap option).

Do you have a JK or a JKU?
If you have a JKU and you don't think you can manage lift and tyres without hitting the garage door then I'd probably go with the lift and get more aggressive tyres in the stock size (245/75/17 or 265/70/17). The extra lift will be of more benefit off road than the larger tyres as it will help keep the belly off the ground.
If you have a JK then ramp over angle/ground clearance isn't such an issue so either option will have benefits.
Getting the lift will also have the added benefit of dumping the horrible stock suspension so you'll get a better ride quality out of it as well as more clearance and more flex.

Check out my Ride(s)
Default

As mentioned above, they are now E rated tyres,if a softer sidewall is intriguing the Duratracs in the 285's are still D rated. I ran them (as have many others) and they were an excellent tyre. I traded in the JK with 50,000km on the Duratracs and they were still only about 1/3 worn with a regular 5 tyre rotation.

Good on and off road manners, not too stiff a ride, not loud, good sidebiters.

Like them so much I fitted them on the new KL.

Thanks guys. Will take a look into Duratracs, not loud is a big plus for me as this is still my daily and I don't find road noise very interesting.

PaulJK mine is the 2 door, I have considered lifting, measuring after settle and go from there with tyres. However, I've had no real issues with ground clearance where I drive, but would prefer a fraction more traction. So my thinking is beefier tyres without lift for now, if I can get away with it.

After having a bit of a look, should I be considering 285s or 295s?

I'm running the ATZs in 33 inch.
The side walls are pretty stiff, at 18 psi they sit quite vertical when parked.
But (most importantly) they bag out pretty good when driving. I was a bit worried the first time I aired down and they didn't start bagging out, but once I saw them contorting around a rock I had parked on while inspecting the first challenge on the drive I was happy.

I think a lot of tyres these days give a longer foot print when aired down. When people don't see the side walls bagging out they think they're not working properly. Better to judge a tyre when it's working rather then when it's sitting parked on the carpark.
