Default Weird handling 2001 XJ -25 offset

Hey ,

So my 2001 XJ has a 2 inch lift on it with -25 offset 31 inch tires. Since i put the tires on the jeep seems to be moving all over the place especially at high speed. The steering box is tight and the jeep goes straight at low speeds however the wheel is very touchy when moving left to right as though its overcorrecting.

The alignment is right according to the shop however they mentioned it may be needed to get some adjustable control arms installed to fix the problem.

Just wondering if anyone has encountered a similar problem and if there is a way they might of overlooked?

Thanks

Since you did the lift, it has put your caster out a little bit and this can make the steering lighter and feel like it is wandering. You can get adjustable arms, which will rotate the diff slightly and bring your caster back to where it should be. I am surprised it is doing this with only 2" of lift. I dont think the offset in the rims would make any difference, but the bigger 31" tyres may make the Jeep feel more touchy.
You can also shim the control arms to get you back.

You can do some googling, but this site should get you on the right track here: http://gojeep.willyshotrod.com/HowtoAlignment.htm

Cheers,

not sure on that backspacing

stock XJ backspacing is in the range of 3"-5" I thought ?

My XJ has a 2-3" lift, various wheels and tyres

I think it may be possible to shim the LCA somehow to slightly alter castor, I will check that out in the future

mine has a tiny wobble at 90-95km, steering feels a tad light, but before my lift it under-steered like a tractor, with the sagged rear springs

If your steering feels like it does not want to return to centre, that is a sign of bad castor.

Alignment shop should be able to give you a printout of castor, so you can check against specs

Ok so turns out my bolts on the steering box were absolutely loose! Put some lock-tight and tightened them up.

So this was the cause of the Jeep wandering around however it still drives a bit over the place for example when you hit a massive bump it sort of jumps a bit to the right.

I think i will invest in some control arms and see how it goes, and maybe first give the steering box some adjustment as the current one in it is a ZJ box but is extremely tight.

You can also get rhd steering box/frame reinforcement kits... I hav a C-rok one. Those frame rails can take a bit of a hammering from bigger tyres. Welcome to the world of continuous mods on your XJ.

Cheers,

If the bolts have been loose its best to replace them. They are probably fatigued & ready to break.
