So here's the video of the ticking I promised:

As you can see the ticking starts right away, then disappears after a few seconds (I didn't notice that before..), and you can hear a moment of "rough idle" at about 0:10 (not very evident in the video, but those "twitches" happen approx. once in 5-10 seconds (irregularly) in the first 30-60 seconds from cold start - after that, fine.

And when engine is hot, you can hear the ticking I mentioned before.

I've also included the viscous heater noise, but that's probably unrelated and I can live with that as I'm not revving up to 4000 very often..

The viscous heater doesn't look like it was engaged is probably just the bearing in the clutch, this is an easy fix, I think the bearing number is in drovers 2.7 crd everything thread.

To test it, turn the heater up to the highest temp to try to get the clutch to engage, then rev the engine and see if the whine is still there.

The cold start could be a leaking injector which is dribbling some fuel into the combustion chamber which is why the white smoke. There may also be a little air in the system too.

What oil have you been putting in the engine and how many K's on it.

I'll test the viscous heater, but it doesn't really concern me much even if it's a bit tired.. I was told the viscous clutch is making that whine and should be replaced (one mechanic said "it's not a big deal until it whines at idle").

Engine has ~250,000 km. And the oil I've put is Castrol 5W40 fully synthetic. The manual says "put 5W30 and if not available - 5W40", so I'm a bit off (used Castrol oil selector and only later found the info in the Jeep manual.. ) Anyway, I think 5W40 is still within the manufacturer recommendations, I will be putting 5W30 as soon as that ticking/smoking is sorted.

Get rid of the Castrol, I had issues with it & I think Drover did to, higher running temps & in my case a noisier engine.
I now run Valvoline SynPower MST SAE 5W-30 & previously PENRITE without a problem.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try Valvoline next. I'm in Europe, not sure if that's the same product?: Valvoline SYNPOWER MST C4 5W30
I see this stuff is a bit more expensive than Castrol, but I guess it must be better.

Some other info:

Went to check the glow plugs using multimeter - only checked 2 because of the hard access, but one is completely shot (0.2 V), and one is half-good (7.5 V) - that is enough for me to replace all 5 for the peace of mind. (Just ordered 5 NGKs)

I also looked for signs if 4-5 injectors were dealt with. I don't see any cuts in the insulation between the engine and the car body. I've decided to test/recondition the injectors for the piece of mind, so I'll be removing the plastic wiper cowl. I'm planning on cutting the access hole myself to make sure it's done neatly and then probably taking the Jeep for injector repair.

I'm hesitating if I should remove the injectors myself (I have a slide hammer and a Mercedes CDI injector puller head), but I've read horror stories of how hard the injectors are stuck in the engine head.. Also, I see that even with the hole cut, it would be impossible to use the slide hammer on injector 5.
Anyone done the injector extraction themselves?

Do a search as bodgie did a write up I think, may even be a link in Everything 2.7..................Ditch the Castrol go to Penrite HPR Diesel 10w40, at 250,000k I would go a 15w40 semi syn oil, I used castrol once and dropped it out 3,000k later, noisy engine ran hotter under load. No problems with Penrite and I'm going to 15w next change I think.
I wouldn't waste my money on a full syn oil in these engines with high k's semi syn is fine with some going back to mineral with high mileage engines and getting good results.
