Default Auto gear changing issues

Having issues with the auto in our 96 XJ. Sometimes the auto will hold in gear and not change before 2600 rpm. This does not happen all the time, but frequently.

The auto has been fully serviced, and new shift solenoids fitted. The auto is in perfect condition mechanically.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what may be the issue. There have been no fault codes detected.

Adjust your TV/Kickdown cable. If it's not the sole cause of the problem i'm willing to bet it'll help. This mechanism is located on top of your throttle body.

To adjust the TV cable you:
1: Push in and hold the release button
2: While holding in release button, push "conduit" in as far as it will go
3: Release button
4: Rotate throttle to WOT, some people do this with the gas pedal. Others do it from the engine compartment.
5: Hold at WOT for a few seconds, cable should ratchet out a click or two.
6: Your TV cable should now be properly adjusted, take it for a test ride.

Here is another post about it on NAXJA

Other culprits for shift issues are the throttle position sensor, and the neutral safety switch.

I've had some shifting issues lately, but they are not as you describe. The TCU does rely on input from these two sensors, so if they are sending the wrong signal you will get unusual transmission performance without codes. Start with kick down cable though, cheap and easy.
