Default XJ Cherokee starter motor

I purchased a new jaylec starter motor January 14 , fourteen months later I had to replace it , how long should a starter motor last.
The starter motor I took out was full off gunk what would cause this and should these starters be pulled out and cleaned regularly , haven't done any water crossing just a few dusty roads.. Click image for larger version

You're gonna get the same answer from most people, check the oil filter adapter (located above the starter).

The O-rings in it dry up and it leaks oil directly into your starter.

O-Rings are cheap, adapter comes out with a Torx driver.

Quick search should find you the details you need!

Give it a clean out and you can buy new brushes in a holder to slap in it
should be good for another 14 months

I've put a new starter in the Jeep cost $128 and will clean out the old one for a spare.
