As far as I'm aware there is not a comparable hydraulic fluid available that will meet MS-10838 specs other than the Mopar product.

I did some extension research a few years ago when I was looking for some and I did check the Penrite site but I didn't go with their recommendation for the Pas Fluid as it wasn't hydraulic fluid and it didn't meet MS-10838 specs. They do make a LDAS Hydraulic fluid for use in hydraulic power steering systems but again it doesn't meet the MS-10838 specs.

I was advised by a Jeep technician that ATF fluid or non-specific power steering fluid must not be used as a refill or top-up as seal leakage and/or pump damage will occur.

So I took no chances and went with the Mopar product.
Hmm for some reason I thought the WH was still on MS-5931 spec... but f%$k you're right, looks like MS-10838 has been spec'd everywhere.

I've found one mention on Bob is The Oil Guy of "Pentosin® CHF 11S or CHF 202" being a replacement. But it's a bit vague.

Looks like I'll be flushing the PAS this weekend ... after a trip to the "local" dealer. Dammit.

I don't mind paying the dealer prices (especially when they're cheaper.), but the inconvenience sucks.

Thanks for correcting me! Hopefully no long term damage to the seals, no leaks so far.

The Mopar hydraulic fluid was specifically made for the WH hydraulic power steering system. I've just checked my records and I actually got mine from morris4x4center.com. The part number is 5142893AA a quart will cost you US$16.97 plus delivery of course, at the time I got some oil filters and fuel filters which was included in the weight for the basic delivery cost so it was viable to get it from the USA.

You haven't had it in there that long so I reckon you should be OK, I think it would take a while to damage seals too much.

While you're at it my suggestion is to install one of these in the low pressure side of the system:

http://www.magnefine.com

Since installing one on my WJ I've not had to adjust the steering box as often so it seems to reduce system wear significantly.

Tell you what I am getting sick of this POS car with its speciality oils

Just had the fluid changed I have 5 different bottles of power steering fluid and transmission fluid not to mention just paying to have the fluid changed and looks like I'll have to do it again what a waste of money

After replacing the battery I hope all the constant codes disappear

I think I am going to sell it let someone else deal with it and they say owning a Jaguar is expensive this Jeep thing takes the cake

I spoke to my mechanic this morning after reading the other posts

He actually spoke to penrite on the phone and they said their PAS fluid is fine to use in the WH models I'll be in Melbourne tomorrow anyway and drive out to their factory and get a definitive answer
I don't really feel like changing it again
