Default 06 WH Gearbox/tfer case issue

Hi team,
Searched about 20 pages but couldn't find anything the same.

Am getting a really bad metallic grinding/scrapping noise coming from underneath. And as per most jeep issues, it's intermittent!

First time it happened while driving at low speed, it seemed to go away when Shifting to neutral. Tonight when it happened, it was making the noise at 60klm/h and was only under power...let off the accelerator and it seems to go away.
Took to my mechanic this morning, and of course, no noise.
Went for a crawl under there last night, and the boot on the drive shaft to tfer case hub has disintegrated. i went driving up the beach on the weekend and then sprayed a bunch of water u derneath when got home, so could of got a bunch of sand and water in there.
There is a bit of play at the tfer case to driveshaft hub...but mechanic rekons its not enough to make an issue.
Engage 4wd low, and no issue.
Drives mostly ok even when the noise is happening...except for a few times it got a bad vibration under power.

Is it potentially sand and water got in through the hub joint causing the tfer case gears/cluth to not engage properly when the constant 4wd is sending power to the front and grinding away at something.

Plan is to drop the fluids and look for contanimemts. Anyone had a similar issue or got any thoughts. I saw the thread about the worn park brake pads...but doesnt seem to be the same.

When my front output shaft bearing went it gave a vibration driving at speed, no noises like you have indicated. Best to replace that sooner than later I reckon. OEM part is available from rockauto.com, but others have used a Falcon XR6 rear of tailshaft bearing I think?

From WH & XH How to's Modifications & Repairs
Once the boot splits it will fail and when it lets go it does so with a very loud bang and in my case a fire.
Replace ASAP!

Thanks rob and clarky.

Def think i am up for replacing cv's. Hoping that is the issues. 220,000ks, so prob time for it regardless. Is going to be out of my knuckle level, so going to be calling some auto specialists or my mechanic monday (might give the local dealer a call for a laugh)

Would they cause intermittent issues though or would they tend to be constant noise and get worse (or go 'bang-clunk')? Thats what had me thinking something deeper in the system thats involved with the 4wd? I dont know the set up in there, but thought there might be some sort of clutch operated by the 4wd system to send power to the front part time...and maybe it wasn't catching the gear properly? Hasnt been any leaking fluid though, so shouldnt have any crap that far in from the missing boot.

Dealer only sells complete prop shaft, CV is not listed separate.

There is no direct path into the T/C from the CV boot so nothing can get into the case that way.

You have the NV245 T/C, here is a link to how it works

When you've replaced the CV joints, have you got to get the shaft re-balanced?

I checked out a bunch of video's on youtube - and def looks like the CV joint is the culprit. Same description of noise etc.

Ordered the CV from Bursons and old mate there asked if I was getting the shaft balanced?
The only mention I saw about that was in one of the vids a guy getting a new shaft made up.

No you don't, not for just a C/V replacement.
