Did that a couple of years ago. Don't know if it helps the LP pump but it sure makes leak detection and bleeding easier.

For some reason can't get jeepdiag pro to work. jeepdiag is OK but not pro. Anyway was buggering about and turned the key and it started. It didn't run well maybe on 3 cylinders and only for about 20 seconds but why? I haven't done anything to it but suddenly it shows signs of life. When it cranks now it is evident 1 cylinder is firing consistently but the others won't join it.

Think I've got to the bottom of it. The electric pump I fitted is switchable and I only use it when bleeding. So I thought I'd switch it on and see what happens. Sure enough she started and ticks over perfectly. Won't rev because the electric pump is not man enough But that says to me the LP pump is U/S. Got another one coming so we will see at the week end. The battery charging bit must be pure coincidence (which I don't believe in) and completely threw me off the scent.

Strange to see that the LP pump went south...
Where did you install the electric pump? Before or after the filter?

You may have a lose o-ring connection on the filter, allowing the LP pump to draw in air.

You could also test to see if it starts without the electric pump and with the fuel line which connects to the filter submerged in a bottle of diesel. That way you can rule out a bad o-ring connection at the filter (line to LP pump, water sensor, thermostatic return valve or filter drain)

Thanks for the heads up. I installed the electric pump between the tank and the filter expressly for the purpose of finding leaks in the whole of the underbonnet fuel system. There are no air leaks around the filter or pipework because the electric pump turns them into fuel leaks and so would be readily visible. Bleeding via the bleed valve shows no sign of air in the system.
