Possibly because the security system is so much better nowdays and theives overall aren't getting any smarter, the average Joyrider may try to steal one and fail (simple as connecting the blue and green wires and then tapping the yellow to the red aint it?), the regular theif may know not to bother trying without the proper equipment or a tilt tray flatbed. The Pro's will take what they want, but do they really want to steal a Jeep? For the effort involved more money per minute can be made on other vehicles with a bigger market for parts I suspect.
Yeah, if you were going to steal one to sell for parts you'd steal a high priced common one like a Cherokee I guess rather than a Wrangler, Commander or Compass.

I'm thinking the thief didn't want the repair bills!

(Sorry, just couldn't resist) But I hope that is true!

All new vehicles sold in Australia since 2000 must be fitted with an immobiliser.
Any vehicle can still be stolen though if a theif wants it. Most common way these days is that they just steal your keys (so always keep the spare in a safe spot).

I keep my spare keys inside a ceramic frog in the front garden. No one would think of looking there!

I was at the beach and lost my keys in the sand so i had no keys to drive my tj home. it was a 2003 tj and with some help from a mate we got her started. We had no issues with the immobiliser or anything. So it's possible
