Default Rear Seal on a TJ - Looking for advise

G'day all,

I've just been up to Melbourne looking at a TJ to buy. It all looks really great but there is a bit of oil under the back of the engine (obviously a rear main seal) and around the CCV vents on the valve cover.

The question I have is, would this be a concern for you if it was your Jeep? How hard and/or costly is it to get repaired? It's not really dripping. All I could find on his garage floor was a spot about the size of a 50C piece.

Would something like that pass a roadworthy in Victoria?

If it wan't for that I would've bought it there and then. So if you guys could let me know your opinions, I would really appreciate it. I hope to get back to him tomorrow.

The TJ is a 2005 with just over 100k on it.

From what I have gathered, from talking to people, most leak.
Unless its pouring out, most say leave it alone, it will be fine.
Also, if left sitting for weeks, some will start to leak, but if driven regularly, they stop leaking.

Depends on the road worthy place. I know of some that would let just about anything through. Most of the time people will clean the underside really well and then right before showing the roadworthy place wipe it clean with a rag. If it is a slow leak it will only gather a drop or two in the time they have it.

If your TJ doesn't have a damp rear main seal something's wrong

Haha thought exactly the same thing when I read that.

Mine's a 2006 with close to 150000km's on the clock and it's damp around the rear main oil seal. In NSW at least, unless it's physically leaking oil onto the ground, it's no cause for a fail on a roadworthy.

It's a two piece seal anyway... so just sump off to change, not gearbox or motor out.

As others have said, most leave it till it's pissing oil out as they always weep (maybe because it's a two piece seal?).
