Default 31x10.5 - R15 tyres on a TJ

Hi, has anyone here put 31x10.5 R15 tyre on their TJ with stock wheels? I know they will be able to be mounted in the wheel but I was looking underneath at the back spring mount and there isn't more than 20mm between the 235 wide tyre and upper spring mount. The 10.5 wide tyre means the inside will be about 15mm closer the spring mount.

I have the standard TJ Sport wheels and a 2" lift.

Thanks,

You may need to adjust the bump stops to stop rubbing but should be ok with your 2" lift. The bump stops are on the front inside of the steering knuckle, and are a bolt with a nut to set the stop. The nut is spot welded to the bolt. All you need to do is remove the bolt and add a washer or two under the nut to adjust the stop.

I've been running 31x10.5 on stock rims with a 2" lift not long after I bought my Jeep 15 years ago. with mudddies its amazing how capable your Jeep will become going up this size

as Jonny Jeep suggests. you will probably need to add a washer to the bump stops so that on full lock there is no risk of rubbing.

it was that long ago for me I can remember if I even did that

edit: just checked mine and sure enough there is a washer on mine. heres a link with what to do http://www.4x4xplor.com/steerstop.html

I used to have 32 x 11.5 tyres on stock rims with a 2" lift - for sure there was very little clearance with the rear spring mounts but it never caused any problems.
If you haven't got an adjustable REAR track bar (or relocation bracket) installed, it will be a lot closer on one side, probably even too close.

As per previous posts, a couple of washers on the steering stops will stop the front tyres rubbing at full lock and again, this will be more of an issue on just one side if you haven't installed a FRONT adjustable track bar.
Here's a pic of the washers on the steering stop, you can see I've added 3 washers but less is better.

I never had any problems with mine at all. Eventually I found a set of 15” Centerlines on Gumtree which have a lot better clearance but I needed to widen my flares as the 31x10.5’s sat out just enough to be a problem if I got pulled over.

Thanks guys, it was the top of the rear wheel spring seat I was concerned about.

Good to hear guys are running that size with the stock wheels.
