I use 10W40 with no drama as well as a few others as well, when I went to 10W it was mainly to get the CJ4 specced oil as it wasn't easily available in 5W40 and tended to be a bit more HD and since I do a lot of towing it ticked my requirements, having the CJ4/CK4/E9 oil keeps the soot oven happy as well .... the oil has slowly climbed in spec over the 10 years from 5W30 C3 to 5W40 CJ4/E9 now CK4/E9 due to some lubrication issues in the US................ which funnily enough seemed to only appear when the yanks started to use the VM engine ....................

I live in Perth, so never gets very cold, so would 10W still be OK ?

I guess it's more about how fast the oil circulates around the engine on startup, so does our engine need the 5W ? Or will 10W still whizz through the oil pump and wet everything fast enough ?

How long have you lot been using 10W oil for ?

Personally I have been using the Penrite Enviro + 10w 40 Diesel Engine Oil over the past 3 years in both my VM's. Never been a problem.
While in Perth a couple of weeks ago morning temps were single digits, but then even Brisbane gets those chilly mornings.,,,but never -20.

The difference between the Penrite 5w 40, which isn't CJ / K compliant, and the 10w 40 which is, isn't all that much according to Penrite. I wrote to them a while back querying whether their 10w would be ok in lieu of 5w.
They responded and wrote that the cold flow difference between 5w and 10w is 5 degrees. 5W will flow to -30, where as the 10w will flow to -25 degrees...so no big deal in Oz.
They said that as far as cold starts go in our climate...no issue, the cold oil of both grades will flow quickly through the engine.

I can understand why FCA recommended 5w 30 originally, not just to bolster their fuel economy figures, but the recommendation is International, whether you live in the UK or Africa. They wouldn't be giving more than one recommendation for differing climates. The back flip to 5w 40 we know about and was likely due t0 the 30 not being thick enough in high heat high pressure situations allowing bearing / journal contact.

Being I do a fair bit of towing I am very happy with the Penrite Enviro + 10w 40 and will likely be sticking with it unless / until I find something better....

There was another write up where it stated using a cold base 15w weight oil in the VM Diesel engine

OK Thanks everyone.

I'm Happy to keep using the 10W -40 and now I know the most important number is the 40.

The Gulf Western is a CJ-4/SN and specifies it's safe for soot ovens.
So should be fine.

Now just gotta keep shopping around for ATF. Don't want to trade my left nut for a 20 L drum. I'm happy to wait a bit longer.

As mentioned, im not a lover of the Penrite 5w-40 enviro oil.
Everytime ive used it in the engine it is way more noisy and it almost feels like a thinner oil.
Probably all the base oil stock is the same but i thinks its what additives the particular company adds, or not adds is the difference.
Been liking the Lubrimaxx oil ive used for years but it is c3 rated .
Again the trade off between ck4 lower ash but also lower lubrication and c3 higher lubrication but slightly higher ash.

The API CK4 equates to the ACEA E9 and they are more for heavier duty running compared to the ACEA C3, few hundred Kms since last service and the Nulon Apex 10W40 seems to have less diesel rattle than the previous blend, with the engine cover and insultaion removed you do tend to hear everything rattling away, typical diesel.... Cant see any problem with a 5W40 C3 if just running solo everywhere...
While I like Penrite stuff it has priced itself out of contention for me, mine is running on Nulon except for the LDAS in the steering and find it pretty good, price and availability wise ...............

Do you notice any issues with DPF? How often do you run through high-heat exhaust cycles now?
