Before i spend money on the mechanic I would seriously get the WJ Diag Pro version and as JeanLuke mentioned read all the codes.
I had also transmission issues from the beginning. My Radiator got ripped due to a fan failure and from there on all went downhill.
I had suddenly the camshaft sensor error coming on, the transfercase position error coming on, the transmission did not shift, just like your case, the transmission slipped and the car did not move at all (had to tow it back home 2x), it went into limp mode and on and on and on.
What I simply did, was changing the cam shaft sensor (takes less than 10 min), I replace the transmission plug adaptor which can be flooded with tranny oil (Genuine Mercedes Transmission 13-Pin Connector Adapter Plug 722.6xx 2035400253, eBay for 50 Dollar genuine MB or 20 Dollar Chinese Knockoff), replaced my battery which was on the way out (Costco 250 Dollar with 900 CCA) and I replaced my gear selector PCB with this one (
https://jeepswj.com/shop/), esp. after the PCB change all my problems went away and the car was behaving normal again. As OffroadSpike mentioned if you are selecting gears and the little LED next to the gear does not light up, your PCB is gone and needs to be replaced. You can get refurbished in Australia but they are almost as expensive as the one from the jeepswj / WJ Diag team (they are the same afaik). I would recommend the latter since it is brand new and has a better design less prone to fail.
Changing the plug and the PCB board can take a bit longer but is doable. For the PCB board you need to take the middle console out to get under the sifter. For the plug get you self some jack stands and a oil pan. When you take it out, you most likely have tranny oil pouring out (was at least in my case), but elsewise it is a easy job to do. I had to go some extra miles since my wires were poking out and I had to re-insulate some of them, making sure they do not cause any short circuit. It is all documented in the Forum if you go back to about beginning of 2022.
