Soapy water work? Not generally worried about water on engine when its not hot. I wash my engine occasionally lol.

Probably okay. I regularly use WD40/RP7 on the engine to help keep the injectors from seizing. That's why I went that way.

I finally solved this. It was a faulty valve set in the fuel pump.

One cylinder in the pump was cutting in and out (mostly when cold) causing the engine to surge as it adjusted the regulating valve to compensate. It was also showing up as what appeared like a miss when cold. Makes sense when you think it through - the fuel pump is driven by the cam, hence is synchronised with the engine so when a pump cylinder was not working it would cause less power from that injector.

A rebuilt fuel pump later and mine no longer surges or runs rough when cold.

Did you get hold of a rebuild kit from somewhere.
Would love to get rid of my surging issue too

I tried a kit at first, but the shaft was badly scored and the lip-seal leaked. I ended up putting in a reconditioned pump. The cheapest I could find was Hi-Tech Diesel in Adelaide. They run their on-line selling via eBay, but I'd recommend giving them a call directly. The one I bought was old stock and there was a little delay in shipping it because they wanted to re-test it before shipping. That impressed me on two fronts - that they re-tested and that they kept me informed of the delay.

EDIT: The recon pump is what fixed the surging. The repair kit is just gaskets and o-rings.

EDIT 2: Wow - looks like I got lucky. They only have new ones now. The only re-builds I can quickly find at sensible prices are Ex-UK. You might have to talk to them about sending them yours for overhaul in Adelaide.

Is it running any better, or did it just fix the surging.

Did you have to send your old pump back to them

It's running heaps better. It was noticeably smoother. Even better when I sorted out the swirl vanes. I still have the old pump.
