Excellent work mate. It helps a lot.

My concern though is different state legislation. For example, I just got this from the Qld Transport website - http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/~/media/c7..._vehicles2.pdf

and it says "The rim diameter may be varied from the standard size
but the overall diameter of the tyre must not vary by more than +15mm or -26mm."

If standard is 749.3 mm, then you can only go to 765mm or 255/65/17.

I know they were looking at having the same laws Australia wide, but I don't think that's happened yet.

SA is the same except it's plus or minus 15mm of the overall diameter. It means that for me to have 33's on my landcruiser I need to have an engineers certificate which is pretty ridiculous.

Great Information & well researched
BUT
I've not heard of any one being pulled over or defected or denied insurance in a Grand for larger tyres.

Correct me if I'm wrong

Hi all,

I think that in most states you can go 15mm without certification but then up to 50mm with certification...There was no problems going to extra 50mm track and 50mm diameter here in Tas when I had the Jeep certified...

RACT wouldn't insure my Jeep with anything illegal on it... including wheels. If no insurance... pretty risky running if in an accident.

Also, the idea of selling a 100% legal/certified car makes a lot of appeal I would image. Seems it can be done if you are happy to loose 1inch of rolling diameter.

The "sweet spot" seems to be a rim with +30mm offset and 265/65/R17. I am getting this combo looked at today. The 275/65/R17 on a +30mm rim was too close to my long arm (would rub under flex) - and it extruded out a little from the wheel arch. Seems to be a lot of tires available in the 265/65/r17 size as well....

The 245/75/R17 is the perfect size (biggest legal tire you can go to), but there are just no options available that I could find apart from the silent armors...which in my view are no good for much at all...

Cheers
Chumby

Excellent post and as you say - +15mm uncertified - +50mm certified..(but who gets engineering certification anyway??)

This should be stickied if it hasn't already.

I have Yokohama Geolander AT/S at 245/65/17 on mine and they are excellent. Not mentioned below.
