Default 360 rebuild suggestions

Hi I have a 360 that has been giving me a bit of grief due to a holley sniper installation which has suffered from fuel delivery, low voltage & rfi issues. I have fixed these problems except for the rfi which I have a couple of things to try from removing unused wires & shortening the remaining ones from the harness, ferrite clips, copper harness shielding sleeves, extra ground wires, dielectic grease & as a last resort new carby & distributer to replace the sniper. I have a new msd camshaft mounted distributer gear to install & decided that while I have it stripped down I ordered a new edelbrock camshaft & lifters to match the performer intake & edelbrock twin roller timing gear kit. What else should I replace while at it & what else could I do to improve the performance, new heads are a bit dear & no I dont want an Ls1. Thanks for any advise.

You’ll never make it a race engine. Just rebuild back to spec in my opinion.

Never mentioned trying to build a race engine just improve what Ive got while I am replacing some of the parts that do wear out on the AMC engine & was hoping someone here might have some useful input for the sniper install before I replace it with a carby.

This is an interesting article on an AMC 360 sniper install. Looks pretty easy, but some good tips in there in case you have missed something causing the issue you have. If it were me, I’d like to keep it rather than go back to a carby setup unless no other choice. Cheers.

I am running the hyperspark distributer, coil & ignition module for full timing control which a lot of people add after they have installed the sniper & ran around like that for a while with no issues, it is when upgrading to full timing control that the rfi issues emerge. I have a surge tank added that eliminates the need to change the fuel line size as the high pressure pump is in the surge tank but I am going to replace it with a xj fuel tank where the spare tyre is if I sort out the rfi issues. As it is I can leave it sitting for a month & it will start immediately but has never ran more than 20 miutes without failing. When adding the hyperspark you need to change out either the distributer gear or the camshaft mounted gear as they will chew out if you dont, I got the MSD cam mounted gear which is more labour intensive but will end up with 2 new gear cogs. When installing the cam mounted gear I am going to replace the timing gear set & figured I may as well change the camshaft & lifters while it is exposed. It is at this stage that I need some advise on what else I should replace while at it, eg push rods, havent got one yet but will put in a new water pump.I am doing up 2 AMC 360s so 1 will use the new carby & distributer & the other will be injected. Like many people I have not found the sniper to be plug & play as it is advertised, more like plug & pay

Typically if youre retaining the stock heads, get the valve seats redone with a 3 angle seat grind, stock is 2 angle and they dont flow that well. get the heads shaved a touch to bump compression too, someone like Eddy at Head Stud in Moorabbin Melb is your man, he did mine.
A HEI style distributor is a good upgrade. Look on US Ebay
Otherwise, if you want to spend some $$, Doug Thorley headers from USA , BJ's Offroad were great. That said, I got a bundle of stuff around 10 years ago when the AUD was about $1-05 US,,, worked in my favor. Whilst there, get a new waterpump/distributor housing too. Email the guys at BJ's for ideas to get the old lump moving....
