Default I hate to whine...but.

OK guys, my 05 WH GC CRD now has a diff whine. (I think) Its not too bad but worse on override and lift off throttle. Definitely sounds like a diff to me its more of a medium high pitched harmonic sound...if that makes any sense. Question now is what do I do about it? I have read some posts which seem to be saying this is relatively common and the fix is an "overhaul kit"?? Who does this work at a reasonable rate within striking distance of Nowra NSW?

regards

Old Hutcho

ps: I know I am getting old and deaf but I can hear it pretty good

A couple of tips,
Check the fluid levels! Fill up to the plug
Take it for a spin in full time 4x4 feel if the rear cover is any hotter than the front one.
It's far more likely low or incorrect fluid than an actual problem with the diff...

Check the rear CV on front tailshaft transfer case end, if the rubber boot is split or destroyed I bet the noise is comming from there. A ford BA one will fit, go to a mechanic that dose CV's to check it. I have some pic's here some where..

What Clarky Said!!

And then check your CV's before you start looking at diff kits. The front diff is pretty hardy and unless you have had a really bad pinion leak should be ok.

Check oil levels if all the others are ok.

If at times it sounds like wind in the roof racks, as Clarky said check front drive shaft rear CV, just replaced mine. Check the rubber boot, hard to see. Did a post on it about 2 weeks ago. Drop shaft and take it to a CV specialist, a Hardy-Spicer CV-861 same as a BA-XR8 uses. Takes a morning to do.
