A bit of research on the spec is all that is required to work out what oil suits, if in doubt email a manufacturer and they will let you know if they do a product that suits.

To be honest I can't say any other modern car is any easier to find the appropriate oil for particular applications, they all seem to have special requirements. Gone are the day of Dexron 3 for everything.

The key specifications for PAS per the Penrite site in relation to Chrysler vehicles does NOT mention Chrysler MS-10838 which is a specific "Hydraulic" power steering fluid, it only mentions Chrysler MS -5931 and MS - 9462. These specs relate to pre 98 Grand Cherokees and WJ/WG's 99 to 04. I looked at this fluid a few years ago now when I was after some power steering fluid for my WH to carry with me on extended outback tips and I was not satisfied it was the correct one to use. It was fairly clear from conversations I had with a Jeep Tech back then that use of fluid other than MS-10838 will damage the hydraulic pump, so I stayed away from it.

If you do some research via lubrication brand sites eg Castrol, Liqui Moly Caltex, Mobil, Shell none of them have a power steering fluid for the WH they all say "refer to dealer". The Nulon site states the same but has a footnote "manufacturer recommends power steering fluid meeting Chrysler MS - 10838."

I'm with Roscoe on this.
... Even though I was (not anymore, yay!) using the PAS.

The specs are the only (reasonably) reliable evidence for all the different oils.

I incorrectly thought that WH was still on MS-5931 for some reason... I doubt Penrite's engineers thought the same thing when they were listing the PAS fluid though, since I couldn't find any documentation anywhere listing MS-5931 for the WH (I must've misread something a while back and never bothered to double-check.).

Sometimes the helplines can be handy - But they're just referring to their database(s), which are sometimes wrong (or not quite right?).

In reality the closest we can get to a trustworthy engineering team is just by checking which specs the oil has been labeled as meeting... they might be wrong (or not quite right.) sometimes too, but it's a safer bet than the helpline.

I've been doing some further research on this issue and it seems to me that the PAS Power steering fluid is a semi-synthetic fluid which was designed for use in Land Rover ACE and power steering systems, it is also suitable for use in power steering systems that require automatic transmission fluids.

Pre 2005 GC models required the use MS-5931 and MS-9462, I've had a look on the Mopar site and Mopar Power Steering Fluid Part 04883077 complies with these specs. From what I gather this fluid is essentially automatic transmission fluid.

When Jeep introduced the 2005 grand the power steering system was changed to a hydraulic system which requires a completely different fluid. Automatic transmission based fluids will not work in a hydraulic system it will destroy the pump because it will not lubricate the pump effectively.

I have sent an email to Penrite questioning the correctness of their power steering fluid recommendation with respect to the WH Grand.

Okay Just had Penrite tech support on the line for half an hour

They are going to email me back with the findings if their PAS fluid is suitable for WH Jeep power steering

Some of the earlier ratings which are listed on the Penrite bottles might be enough as it is with engine oils

The engine recommended 229.31 but can use 229.51

I now use mineral which is rated 228.1 and 229.1 and the oil consumption problem has completely stopped the engine also sounds less rattly as well using the mineral oil but that's another post

I contacted Peter from http://liquidintelligence.com.au/pen...luid-australia about "Pentosin CHF 11S" as US forums have mentioned it.

His reply below.

Quote:
Hi David,
Pentosin in Germany are hopeless at identifying the compatibility of their fluids in non-European vehicles. For what it's worth... attached is a compatibility hydraulic fluid chart from another German company that suggests that the MS-10838 and the Pentosin CHF 11S are compatible.

If you would like to have a chat about Pentosin CHF 11S we are available on 1800 441 163.

so again no definitive answer & its the same price as the Mopar oil.

I have also emailed "Liqui Moly" but as they still list ATF fluid for the WH transfer case I don't think I would take there word for it
