On a side note, I noticed that thread also suggested that treating the CV bell weakened the shaft. Do you think this might be the case here?

I'll be on the hunt for cheap CVs and inners over the next couple of weeks.
The Hilux Upgrade is defianatly better than fitting a GU diff.

And the heat treating does not effect the stub shaft in any way.

Do you have a link to the discussion on OL about this?

It covers the Toyo longfields in GQ diffs and also mentions the treating weakening the shaft. Sam is actually the one that brings it up I think.

Im pretty certain i can treat a set of GQ ones without effecting the stub shaft but only time will tell. I have a pair of GQ CVs comming my way as i type this so should have some results within a few weeks.
If you havent worked it out yet JEEP-EATER=RUFF=Tony from Haultech The above reply was made before we had taken delivery of any GQ CVs so we never realised how small the stub shaft was.

Ben,

Given how the GQ gear is holding up so far would you do it again?
I guess this is a better question for after tuff truck but I am interested to hear your thoughts.
We watched Wild Violet grenade multiple CV's that weekend last year. I lost count of how many times they were back at camp fixing stuff.

cheers

It's hard to compare Zach, I'm sure the diffs themselves are significantly stronger than the D30 and D44 arrangement. I'm also running 38.5 swampers compared to 35 claws that I was running before. Every situation I've broken something has been where I've put it in a really bad position and just kept driving knowing it would probably break. In terms of choosing between D60 and Patrol diffs again, I'd probably go with the Patrol, as the diffs themselves only cost me $2k, locked and with 4.6s in them. Even if I went to GU I'd probably have paid a couple of grand more for the same thing, whereas D60 would be 4x that just for the units.

As I said further up, I'm going to try to take as many second hand factory CVs and axles as I can get my hands on for TTC, but it's unlikely the new tracks there will be as difficult as the stuff I was driving when I broke the last 2 CVs, so hoping not to grenade more than one on each side

Tony, I didn't realise it was you. As I said earlier I'm a little disappointed that the CVs didn't hold up quite as much as I'd have liked them to, but I suppose everything is going to break if you put enough strain on it. When I've got a bit more $$ after TT I'm definately going to look into something stronger. If you guys have any product that you think is stronger I'm all ears
