Default Retierment of xj

xj 97
212000 km

Good evening I have only ever visited this forum when problems could not be solved and you have always answered thank you.

Rego ends on Nov 14 and am considering retiring it. My mechanic advises it will not past rego because the back right passenger door hinge needs welding back to place.

Would it be suggested to store it on the lawn for a long grass feature? because one day I will tear it apart and build it up to good as new condition....

Sell it

Or lastly let it be scavenged by jeep enthusiasts so I could plant a tree in the engine bay to perfect my long grass front lawn feature?

I have not cared for the cosmetics....But all moving parts, the engine, oil liquids and filters have been kept to good standard.

It starts with ferocity, engine temp is rarely above 97ish on really hot days with as low as 60 when driving 50 and more. And gets a whopping 380km a tank with only short runs.

What would your input be please?

Jason

welding up the rear door hinge should be a relatively easy job, and may be possible without even removing the door itself (check Google/Youtube)..or get a quote of an auto body guy or mobile welder

If thats the only reason you are considering to sell, I wouldnt sell it just for that

my attitude would be to fix it and drive it

but that's my thoughts, your decision will be based on your circumstances
and what other cars you have.

personally watching "classic" car prices and availability i would be loath to sell it
let alone break it up

have you a shed??, because leaving it in the open not being used will be a death sentence

dear old mums back shed is a good place to start, plus she needs to clear all that old junk out anyway

what ever you do its your decision, but from and old blokes perspective, do you want me to start on all the cars ive sold and now regret

will i start with my 1971 HQ 2 door 350 GTS? had a family and needed a house

i got $4000 for it 1n 1987, i can't even afford to buy another , now that good ones are $100K

my ,94 XJ limited now has 448000KM on it and spends most of its time in the shed, i won't be selling it EVER but then ive now owned it 24 years

ive just been freeing up the back door lock mechanisms, its been a work in progress for all those 20+ years.

anyway enough from me, its your choice.

Weld the back door hinge with an inexpensive stick welder purchased from eBay and it'll be good as new (depends on your ocd level though lmao).
