Might've been needed if it was stuck in a creek bed like Benno said. Would've been a heavy snatch with a fair bit of 'sucking power' because of all the wet sand surrounding the vehicle. Pretty scary result nonetheless, really shows the importance of using dampers when snatching

markandallan I'd be more inclined to go for a full bullbar as those front areas where the lights are situated are a bit open for an animal strike particularly a roo.

During a recent caravan trip a fellow caravanner came in to where I was camped at an overnight rest area with some pretty bad damage to the right front end panelling, it took the headlight etc out. He'd been travelling after sunset so the risk was high.

He did have a Mopar nudge bar and thought he'd be well protected and wished he'd spend the extra $$ on a full bar.

I know you're looking at the uneek one which does have the wrap around protection down low but you hit a big roo and I'd be concerned it will take out the light and damage that area a bit.

Just my opinion mate.

Hi Roscoea
Yeah my problem is trying to Keep the weight to a minimum.
I would not be planning on driving dusk till dawn but I'm sure it will happen.

The uneek bar is 85kg then add
rock sliders 40 kg
fridge full 35kg
Rear draws 55 kg
Second battery 35 kg
Three people 200 kg
Full tank 90 kg
Towbar 30 kg
Recovery kit and compressor 20 kg
Luggage 20kg
Tools 20 kg
Plus van ball weight 180 kg

810kg total

Take bar of and we are still over weight.

Car can carry around 660kg roughly

So bar puts it over way over legal weight limit.

Regards
Mark

Mark,

I have an ECB Alloy bull bar on mine 32kg hasn't made any difference that I can see to the height of the front end...it has a nice dent on the right lower section from a roo I hit in the middle of the day,,,shouldn't be to hard to get out. It was the first thing I put on the vehicle when I bought it last December if I hadn't put it on the roo would have taken the front right out for sure and probably damaged the radiator.

Weight can certainly be a problem when touring around and it is surprising how quickly it adds up..I got myself self a set of van towball scales years ago to keep an eye on it so I know what I can put in the vehicle.

Mines around 210kg, you can play around with it by moving stuff around in the van....initially it was around 230

The transport authorities in some of the States particularly Qld and NSW do checks now too many people overloading their vans and vehicles so you need to be careful.

I think a vehicle's Kerb Mass or Weight includes a full tank of fuel, it certainly includes oils and other fluids. Could pay you to check on that if it doesn't you saved 90kg.

An alloy bar would save around 53kg...do you need the rock slider 40kg...there's potentially 183kg.

Anyway food for though perhaps.

That's scary! Benn0 I take it you weren't personal there nor have any more photos? I would be really interested in seeing the failure point. Doesn't however look like the recovery point it self failed. I'm not an expert in certifying recovery points, but does the rating of a rated hook take in to account anything more than the hook itself and the mounting bolts? Enough force and something has to give.

I don't know the situation but where possible I would use an equaliser strap between the two hooks, that way as in this case if one let's go it's tethered to the other one stopping the hardware from turning into missiles. Why are the tyres dead flat?

At the end of the day this is abit careless and short-sighted from uneek, personally if I was them I would be sh!tting myself. Their statement about only been designed for towing might not cover them when they have clearly advertised the product as a heavy duty 4wding accessory which does not allow the installation of rated hooks.

Those are the best pics of the failure, there are some of the Jeep in the creek after the tide came and went.

A guy on FB who posted the below pics said his mate was snatching them out and the tow point came loose and went through his rear window. It certainly looks like they were pulling off one point. And it looks like the winch mount came out first, then the tow point has let go. I guess this is the risk when the tow point is attached to a welded bracket, instead of directly to the chassis rail horn as the normal recovery points are.

Winching out may have been better, perhaps a bit of digging first to make the ridge of the creek bed lower, and maybe some maxtrax down. Doesn't look like a very good recovery effort, but maybe they were panicking about the tide.
