On the original filter I disconnected the fuel return from the filter so it ran direct to tank, just used blanking caps on the filter outlets, that improved things, replaced the O rings all round (bought from a Benz dealer)and then left the filter alone, the CAV unit I fitted was mounted so I just replaced the $10 filter, topped it with fuel just needed a small bleed to dispel any air. The trick is to mount it lower than the fuel lines so they don't bleed back, mine would syphon from tank if I let it...........
A small air leak can happen from that stupid valve on the bottom either the O ring or the actual housing, while I loved the engine, the fuel system was a big pain... I let mine go at around 280,000km great wagon it was. I was concerned I could have problems with plastic bits by 300K kms and 10 years, the best thing was after all that time and kms my injector bleed back was nearly the same as when new and the same for fuel pressure, I never follow recommended service times.
