Default XJ Rear storage drawers - Another option

I have been meaning to put these together for quite a while (few years) but the set up we had worked well for the last 6 years or so, Carpeted 16mm formply false floor on SS legs with under bed storage tubs. But with an 8 week trip to the Kimberly planned at the end of June I thought I'd go for something a little more robust. I have made a start using ideas from Steve F & JJ's setups and modified to suit my needs & current setup. I'm using 16mm formply that I got a sheet of 2.4m x 1.2m for $37 & 100kg runners of ebay. I am using the std tie down points in the rear cargo area to hold the unit down as well. I will also put together a set of dwgs as I go ,I'm an Arch Draftsman, so could possibly make them available as a guide if anyone is interested.

Here are a few pics of the old & the proposed. Will update as I get further along.

Existing set up. Excuse the mess

And some progress shots of the new

Existing false floor placed on top, not fixed yet.

It's a Milford that they produced when the 97 update came out with the spare on the left. The pre update version only had the spare cut out on the right but this has both to make it a universal pre/post fitment. I had it fitted when we first got the XJ in 2000.

Thanks JJ. No when I had it installed they didn't put in the top brackets for the forward position but I do have the longer arms for the bottom mounts. Didn't bother me too much because I didn't ever see us using it in the forward position. Would upset the kids seating as well ha ha. They did say that not to big a deal to install the front brackets if I wanted but never bothered.

I have the dual position and find it very handy, no kids though.
I do have thoughts of building a new cargo barrier but it will just be the top portion to allow easy access to the battery that sits immediately behind the barrier but we will see if I get the time to do it....

Ok finally finished the drawers. Here are a few more progress shots.

And the finished product & mounting.

1 last thing on the cards is to make a lid/insert for the left drawer to use as a table top for roadside stops.
