Great day exploring. Have been to uluru etc before, but today we venturedto new areas. Did the valley of the winds at Kata Tjuta. Then off to uluru and the visitor/cultural center and main car park and the gorge walk before driving around the loop road to the waterhole. Definitely more to see then meets the eye.

Staying in the camp ground, nice facilities with running toiletsand hot showers

So been out of range for a bit and in that time traveled from Uluru to Darwin over about a week.

If heading to Kings Canyon stay at the KC resort or wilderness lodge. There is also a KC station but looks a bit dodgy and the fuel is expensive. We camped at the resort, $55 for an unpowered site but good clean amenities and a pool. Fuel was $1.98l for unleaded and think diesel is about the same. The resort has a great viewing platform to watch either the sunrise or sunset and the canyon is only a short drive away. If heading into KC 2 walks are available as well as water at the main car park. The walk up the middle of the canyon was easy and what we did. You can also do a 6km (3 hour) walk around the top of the canyon. From those we spoke to this walk is a bit more challenging but still ok, but take water as it will take you the allocated time. All roads for uluru to KC are sealed but your paying a premium for fuel so take extra if you can as this will help you to save some money

So from Kings Canyon we had a few options to get to Alice Springs. The main highway is easy but is 474km. Thereis the Larapinta Drive (loop) which is 322km of which most is corregated dirt (this does loop past Palm Valley). We took the Ernest Giles Rd. It was a 102km back track on the highway, then a left and 80-100km of dirt to get to the stuart highway. Some pockets of heavy corregation and soft sand but all 2wd country and easily driveable (my mum did it in her soft Hyundai pretend 4wd) and swings past a metior crater. Then approx 150km on the highway into Alice. The Ernest Giles rd is about 290km shorter than the highway and less dirt than the Larapinta Dr. One of the photos shows a map of all the above

We also ventured out to Rainbow Valley. 22km of easy dirt. Would recommend if you have time as RV was stunning. It also has basic camping including long drop toilets, tables and shade shelters

Usually we would suck it up and do a long day from Alice Springs to Mataranka. Its a long day, especially with 2 kids, but this time we camped at the Devils Marbles. First time a i have camped there and my advice is to get in early. We stocked with supplies in Alice in the morning before heading out and stopped at places like Alerion & Whycliff Well before calling in DM to camp around 4. Again get in early as even at 4, we got the last spot. It was packed. Its a lovely place to camp, with long drop toilets and lots of spots but the grey nomads start calling it a day early.
