If you apply diagnostic logic to your issue,

imo, the most likely (but not only) cause is a faulty PCM

Reasons;

As the fuel pump does operate, (continuosuly?) it does not appear to be;

*lack of ground at the PCM or fuel pump
* broken or open wiring
* bad connector
* bad relay (as you have swapped them)

It is my understanding the earths in the PCM are handled by individual semiconductors, at PCM instruction

(and that they are the same as battery earth??)

By my understanding, the ASD relay will run for 2-3secs, and shut down ignition if everything is not ok...that does not appear to be the fault in your case, as the pump runs on.

it is possible some sensor or wiring is shorted, however, given the amount of time you have spent fault finding, if you can obtain a matching num PCM for $130, it would be the next logical step imo

the other guy in the linked last post seems to have your exact problem..us '96 guys got to stick together

no idea, if u figure it out let me know.
honestly as far as i know theye were no major changes between obd2, auto pcms till the second speed sensor was added in the aw4 around '98 iirc.
this is all background / " picked it up somwhere" for me having had a 95 obd1 for over 10 years.
In aus back in '96 auto was the only flavor Xj came in.
its here if you want it, its not beeing advertised.

Most people dont know this but they are totaly reprogramable, its why i have it I had aspirations of using it and it's loom to custom tune my stroker.
never happend, loom was bined 3 months ago.

Cheers rainman definitely considering it I have no idea but after seeing your post I checked my numbers and posted I then got another beer and googled and ended up on ebay looking at pcms (not comparing prices with your generous offer)...but numbers mostly they all share the top barcode number P56041......The Big Number is different?
So many 96 autos with different BIG numbers in fact I found one in the USA a perfect match a P56041/252 it was for a 4 litre 96 Grand Cherokee?
maybe awg might know more about the numbers?

The BIG numbers are the last 3 digits of the part num.

The small nums starting with 56 are the the first digits of the part num

2 of my '96 are 252 and one is a 287 (I think)

My Jeep mechanic mate says he has NEVER seen a manual Jeep Cherokee 4.0 XJ..only autos !

If I was you I would grab Rainmans generous & helpful offer
..for $50, you would spill that much drinking beer lol

if you enter the following search term term into Google

"jeep cherokee xj pcm 56041534AD"

It comes up with info that would strongly suggest that is a '98 PCM

also that it may be suitable for a 97-01

I have no idea whether it would work in a '96

Whether it is a '98 PCM could probably be determined by examining the Parts Manual for that year

56041 is the first digits of all the PCM
