For us, wires the only way to go.
We love rockcrawling, so when the situation arises, that a winch is necessary ,can almost guarantee that the wire will be running over rock, pinging and blowing tuffs of dust in the air as it tightens.

I use a 12,000lb ironman on my TJ as it was a gift. mostly happy with it too. I fitted the control box under the bonnet to keep connections dry too. if I was in the market for another winch, Warn Zeon & the Mean Mother are well built with quality components. The 8274 Warn is probably the best off the shelf winch you can buy though in my opinion.

Wire vs Rope.......you see a lot of arguing.
I figure they're "horses for courses".......use it regularly, especially over rock, and you'd be better off with well maintained wire.
For me, with my occasional use, I have a sliding chafe cover and keep a UV cover over the synthetic on the drum.......so I think I'm better off with synthetic for my use.
I don't think there is a right or wrong on cable choice.....just what works best.
With the thought on using the small Quad bike style winches as a rear winch, I'd be concerned about the capacity of the brake in those small winches to hold the weight of a large vehicle......I'm not sure they would stand up to it.
Anyone want to test one?

Are winchs difficult to fix? I have a Warn 9.5XP. I turned it on the other day, it worked for 2 seconds then stopped. Its been a very long time between uses.

Plenty of online guides for rebuilding warn winches and relatively easy. Simply put, pullnit apart, clean the crud from the motor as most likely the brushes are stuck and clean out the gears at the other end, regrease and reassemble. Though it could be the solenoids as well. Best thing before pulling it all out is run a multimeter across the motor terminals while tring to run it to see ifnits getting power. That said you should strip it down once a year for regular maintenance anyways.
