Spoke to FCA again today. My June 2017 build, November 2017 purchase (with mopar towbar) GC Trailhawk was confirmed not to be on the recall with my VIN number...... I’m not so sure!

The lady at FCA that took my call said the information they have doesn’t actually say if I have a towbar fitted, so I’m assuming they just get a list of VIN numbers from dealers that they fitted the affected towbars to.

She said if I’m concerned I should contact the dealer again and they will double check with my VIN to see if an affected towbar was installed. I suggested that it might be that my towbar was “older stock”, like, before the manufactured dates of the towbars in the recall. “It might be possible” was the response.

In the next couple of days I will crawl under the Trailhawk myself and look if I can see the serial number of the towbar in the recall on my vehicle. To sum up it appears to have nothing to do with the vehicle, and more the towbar, that’s what I took away from the conversation with the woman at FCA anyway.

You can check the part number on your towbar to confirm for yourself, and also there is a pic of the two different styles to work out which one you have. This would be quicker and less painful than talking to your dealer I suspect. If it is not on the Recall site then I can find the letter for you.

Probably the Mopar tow hitch receiver/hitch that wasn't recalled.

As noted in the post above, it was the updated/new towbar setup that was recalled, you should be able to find an older one still.

Here's one of the older non recalled ones:

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Genuine-...-/161712375933

Now the question is does it fit your year Grand Cherokee? By all reports yes as other vendors towbars which were designed for use with 2014 onwards Grand Cherokee still work, but as always your mileage may vary.

I'd go for it, easier than buying a JKU.

Thanks for that.

I had a look at my tow bar last night. See pic.
Certainly looks like the one in the recall, but unfortunately I don’t have the hitch Tongue which is where the model number is by the look of it. Will get hold of it on the weekend to confirm but from the evidence so far it appears to be a recalled towbar... which makes me wonder why it hasn’t been recalled for my vehicle...

That's a recalled unit according to self inspection on the previous page - check the part number underneath?

If anyone with a 2017 wants to catch up in the Perth inner North East to compare the installation of a MY14 system for possible compatibility, I would be happy to assist.

Cheers, Steve
