CORRECT OIL FOR MY14-MY17 GCs.

I have been trying to find out if there was a Penrite oil suitable for my MY14 GC diesel.
I contacted Penrite Technical Centre and found out some interesting info.
They contacted Jeep to find out their recommendations and they said that only here in Australia, they recommend Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 to their dealers.
The interesting fact is that it does not even meet Jeep's specifications for use having a 25% greater ash creating property. ( They thought it should be OK, even though it wouldn't be allowed to be used anywhere else in the world because of not meeting specifications and voiding warranty. )
Penrite said they have an oil the same specification as the Shell Helix Ultra but wouldn't recommend it seeing it did not meet Jeep's specification. They recommended their Enviro+ 5W-40 which at least meets ACEA C3 and is used in Europe, or possibly Enviro+10W-40 which meets Jeep's CJ-4, seeing I don't live in an area that gets frosts etc, and only use the GC for caravan towing and highway work.
So much for Jeep's servicing and the oil they use!!
Mine is out of warranty and I do my own servicing.

I still reckon Mobil1 5w-30 is the best. They have changed to 5w-40 to reduce the bearing failures that have been seen when towing, but mobil1 is a heavy oil and still meets the higher deposit standards.

Been using Penrite Enviro+ 5W-40 in mine now for the past 4 oil changes and its due again so make that 5. No problems using this oil. Personally I think people go a bit over the top with type of oils as long as its a good quality synthetic oil, like you say Jeep don't even use the correct oil.

No they don't, and probably explains a few issues with DPF regens not working and having to be forced etc. A quick yarn with the service manager at the local stealership after purchasing my Jeep quickly convinced me they would never see my car if I can help it. Make no mistake, a low SAP oil is crucial to the correct operation of your diesel. If you then choose to piss off the EGR and DPF, then you could run most any quality oil.

Our story. MY14 Overland CRD (build date April '13) so it's 4 1/2 years old now, has always been serviced by the dealer with Shell Helix 5W-30 ultra in the early days. They were told by FCA Aust. that that was ok. The years have passed and at her 90,000 service, she was swapped (by the dealer, no mention of it from me) to Havoline 5W-40.

I've copped flack from other WK2 Aust. owners on JG for staying with the dealers choice of oil rather than swapping and supplying the dealer with Mobil.

I trust my service guys, and interestingly, our Overland was the exception to the rule, when prior to the release of the TSB for software correction of the DPF algorithm in Dec of 2015, had never (and still has never) had a DPF failure resulting in Limp mode. Those using Mobil still had the failure back then prior to the release of the TSB. We never did and never have.

Mobil 5W-40 probably is the very best you can go with, but I'm far to busy to source it and supply it to the dealer. I'm happy with the Shell/Havoline 5W-40 and so is our Grand which continues to be faultless year in, year out.

My 14 has recently clocked 50,000k and as it's now out of warranty and at the 40K service in Feb the dealer still used a 5w-30 (didn't know about the TSB)
I've done my first oil change and used Penrite Enviro+ 5W-40. Also used genuine filter, this time.

It seems like there is no common brand of oil being used by the dealerships. I have serviced mine with the same dealer since I purchased it and they use Castrol Edge 5W30 DPF compatible oils.

I have not asked them if they are using the 5W40 oil and they did not confirm a change when I had the 40K service a month ago.

I have now purchased Valvoline 5W40 and Castrol Magnatec DX5W40 and will be using these in the future. I suspect that the dealership I use will also be using Magnatec DX5W40 as they appear to be a Castrol house.

I will check at the next service and confirm/deny.
