Just lodge a complaint with NRMA and tell them you are disappointed that your car has come out worse than when it went in !

My rear axle seal leaked into my rear drum. Also a case of ‘misadventure by mechanics’......

Got to it early enough to clean down with brake cleaner. Bit squeaky and not 100% to begin with but came good after a couple hundred k’s.

If the diff fluid seeps in too much and left too long then definitely new drum shoes.

Complaint lodged. Should get a call from the assessor within 48 hours.

Panelbeater says they quoted and worked on what they were told by the office & insurance company. Excuses for poor work were made. They said they used the brackets that were on the supplied bar, which means that either the chassis is bent under there & they didn't look at it, or they slapped the bar on & didn't even bother to line it up.

It's booked in for another assessment next week to get the job done properly.

I'd be very suprised if those brackets on my old rear bar were bent. It was straight as a die when I removed it from mine.

I'd say more than likely they just bolted it up without looking.

That's what they said they did. Although that still means that they bolted it on without bothering in any way to check it was on straight.

Either way it doesn't speak well of their attention to detail, and ensures I'll be going over it with a fine toothed comb after the next time they have it.

Just to update:

Dropped it back in on Monday the 7th for the assessor to check. (Now I'm driving around in a Kluger, which is ok, better than the Outlander I had last time. $120/day for normal rental.))

They sent it to a mechanic who, they said, made some adjustments to center the axle, but couldn't get it all the way back. Assessor told them to send it to another mechanic. They told me they'd probably send it over on Tuesday the 15th when I called to find out what was happening.

Called again yesterday to see what the diagnosis was... It will go over on the 21st to be checked as that's the first opening the mechanic has. Then, assuming this one can work on it, (apparently they are a local 4wd specialist), they told me it's a 7-10 day lead time waiting for the axle shaft!

Looks like I'm stuck with the rental for another 3 weeks at least. At least the insurance is paying for it!
