still i reckon 41k takes it over that affordable limit of most, i mean if they dropped say 4k drive away too 37k that just seems so much less and brings people in that are willing too pay the money, just my opinion, i know i wanted a 4dr so bad until i seen this pricing...

I agree. I mean for the thrity grand I paid for my tj, what the hell was available? A rav? an x-trail? maybe two Jimnis?
For $40k+, I would have started looking at quite a few other good 4wds. At that price range theres some fantastic second hand 4wds on the market

i mean as much as it pains me too say it if i had 40k to spend on a 4x4 tourer/hardcore/fun truck........... i would have got a defender, i got a jeep originally cause i wanted a patrol and my missus wanted an auto car, so we comprimised and got the jeep, i have been real happy with it but still if i was going new/near new and them $$$$ defender would be a better buy.......sorry DC

I've been anticipating that the JK 2 door would be around the 35k mark drive-away, with the Rubicon just under 40k drive-away.
The Unlimited Rubicon needs to be under 45k drive-away or it simply won't sell in any real volume. Above 45k and the buyer will be comparing it to too many other 4wd's whose creature comforts would leave the JK for dead (I'm talking prado, pajero, pathfinder here). Much as it pains me to say it, I'd be very surprised if the Unlimited matches the comfort and feature levels of the three p's. The way I see it, the single strong selling point which will entice the p group of buyers to consider an Unlimited is the attraction of Rubicon's superior off-road ability (axle strength, lockers, low transfer case ratios, etc).
I reckon the p group would like to have the better off-road ability, but they aren't willing to pay extra dollars for it.

For me, if Nissan did a short-wheelbase Patrol in Oz (they do in Japan) or Toyota did a short-wheelbase Cruiser, I'd buy it. But they don't, so the Wrangler is my only choice. (Not into the Landrover 90 - way to primitive.)
But having said that, to buy a Patrol/Cruiser with diff locks and everything like that standard it would cost a lot of $$$. But, they do come with bigger (again) tyres and I think you're right - out of the box they do have a bit more off-road ability.
