Default Rear recovery points

Hi guys.

I'm addressing a number of issues with the XJ at the moment and one high on the list is my rear recovery point.

At the moment I have a rear bar/tire carrier I purchased years ago from an online store in QLD. It has a hitch receiver, but it's not rated or has any sort of rating plate on it as far as I can tell.

I never wanted to put much hurt on it as its poorly constructed and made of thin plate, however my last foray to the beach saw me having to tow a patrol that spewed it's guts up. This resulted in the bar bending like a banana so I'm not too keen on snatching off it again.

I can't really afford a new rear bar and carrier at the moment, and I really want to keep the spare on the carrier if I can. I was wondering would it be possible to bolt one of those 4500kg tow hooks you can get from supercheap somewhere in the rear, or is this not safe practice? Any alternatives?

When i had to make my own recovery points on the rear of my xj (no tow bar fitted) i used a heavy piece of angle, I think 125 x75 x 12.
I made it long enough to pick up the bolt holes where a tow bar normally mounts in the chassis, on the 75 wide side of the angle and fitted a rated hook to the 125 wide section , i fitted one to each side of the chassis it was solid as .

just get a tow bar from the wreckers

Thanks for the suggestions. Ended up installing two rated tow hooks on either side of the rear bar close to where the bar mounting bolts are, similar to your suggestion kj. Its quite solid, intended to be used with an equaliser strap to spread the load. Should suffice until i organise a rear bar.

Towbar and Bushranger hitch is the easiest solution...
