WK2 3.0L Making Oil - Advise needed
Hi All,
Hoping to get some advise/help (sorry for the wall of TXT), some time ago i noticed that my jeep (2015 3.0L TD - WK2) seemed to be overfull on oil, no troubles, drained a bit, thought i must of overfilled at service.
Around a month later i noticed again overfull (we are talking an inch over on stick), I took into work to give a good service / fresh oil and a good measured amount to keep a close eye on it! , had oil level spot on (7.6L with filter change) and have been watching / checking ever since!
Since doing i can confirm that oil level is rising, not at a great rate but its gone from around 3/4 when cold to the full mark when cold over 3x weeks, its definitely rising..
I am hoping to get some advise on why this may be? Its definitely not coolant, oil color and look is fine, nothing milky, and coolant level has not changed at all (over the last 12x months), I suspect its diesel entering oil (although i cant really smell it).
I thought maybe DPF regens (wife uses car for school runs etc, very little highway work), but when i hooked up a scan tool to try to do a manual DPF burn it would not let me as the DPF was only at around 75%? Assuming because of this it wouldn't be blocked or trying to do regens?
This being said, it did come up with DPF full a year or so ago and needed a manual burn, I cannot say if fault was consistent post this time.
The only other thing i was thinking is maybe leaking high pressure pump into engine (seal?) or injector leaking? But this being said the car is not running rough, no surging, no smell of fuel, not blowing smoke even after first starting?
Only thing i noticed when hooking up scan tool is one of the injector correction values is around 2 where the others are closer to 0? not sure if this matters?
I will be doing an oil sample over weekend however hoping that someone on here has experienced similar, and can give some guidance?
Thanks, Brad

Could be something leaking/not sealed correctly as you said, but my bet would be the DPF's playing up and doing a bunch of regens, consequently adding diesel to the sump. A way to check how often it's doing regens is use an OBD reader with app like Jscan or Torque to monitor exhaust gas temps.
Something else to think about is that the dipsticks on WK2s can be quite difficult to get consistent readings from.

I had a similar problem with my Jan 15 build diesel in 2018. My oil life % would go from 100% (after an oil change & reset) to zero % & oil change required message after approx 3500km. Typically the oil life % will drop 1% for every 200km when the DPF regen cycle is working OK - I was seeing 2% drops in oil life % approx every 35-40km. I was draining approx 10ltrs of oil after 3500km when changing the oil. The problem was the DPF continually trying to regen (flow restriction) & the PCM calculating the additional fuel being used for the regen & reducing the oil life % accordingly due to the extra fuel being burnt (heavy duty/extreme towing). The problem was fixed with an off car DPF clean & the fitting of a new DPF pressure differential sensor.
Prior to the W58 software update I was seeing regens approx every 600km of highway driving - post W58 software update I am seeing regens about every 220 - 280km of highway driving
Cheers

That's interesting - I don't think I've seen anyone note that before

Thanks for the info guys, it might still be consitantly trying to do regens, just would of thought if it needed it it would of let me do a manual burn..
I will hook up the scan tool over weekend and have a good look at things, I never really noted values for pressure differences / temperatures etc, so i will pay good attention to that.
I dread the thought of removing the DPF to clean! but it may be inevitable.. long shot, what would be the values "acceptable that is" for pressure difference ?

Very interesting posts, if just doing school runs it could be trying to do burns but not completing them fully so what fuel ends in sump isn't burnt/vapoured off.......
They do need a reasonably regular run to keep things happy, mine doesn't do school runs but I have noted when doing just local running it will do a 10 min burn every 200-220km but when it gets a long run each week this jumps to near 300km.
My way of reading the dip stick after much testing is 7.5lts of oil in sump at service, taken for a run and parked up with hot engine, come back after a brew and squiz at AJOR I pull the stick out gently so it doesn't wick up the tube, wipe off and put it back in to pull back out again gently, I get a reading on the max every time now and when cold it is just under the line....... changed every 10K it doesn't make any but may require a tad around the 9K mark ..........
What is your lt/100km reading if thats up in the high 9's or 10's for around town then it using diesel for sure........... AlfaOBD app will show you DPF burn times as well as pressures for most....

At the moment its more around 11-12lt/100km for highway driving.. never though much of it as my wife may spend an hr or so in school lines each day idling.. but it probably is excessive..
I will have a good look at the DPF burn times and pressures etc, id say its likely the culprit.. i think the soot level is already around 80% after doing a forced burn a year or so back... might need a chemical clean
