Good write up glend...

just to add some info peeps asked...

*After taking it for a drive (as in its at operating temp), with engine running and in neutral, let it idle up for 5 mins, wipe dipstick clean, slowly slide in check level, add fluid, repeat above until level is correct. All Chrysler boxes are very picky when it comes to the fluid level, too much or too little can cause funny shifting issues.

*2.8 CRD is a 545RFE and NOT a 42RLE
*42RLE is the wishy washy box used behind the V6 petrol.
*The 42RLE (V6 petrol) only has a pickup filter and no spin on return.
*The 42RLE (V6 petrol) from memory is a different pickup filter, I think it fits but the pan will hit it.

Regards
Daz

Thanks Glend for this excellent tutorial!

Just completed the full service last night and as you did I added 6.5lts of ATF before taking it for a test drive and then checking the level (in neutral). The level was down the bottom of the dipstick in the "Add" or "Cold" section every time I checked it.

Today I checked the volume of fluid that was drained (it was left to drain for 1 hour) and I reckon it is close to 8lts or more in total. Should I add another 1.5lts and see where it ends up on the dipstick or is the whole level checking system flawed? I don't want to overfill it as I haven't installed a drain plug on the pan yet.....

I did have the front end of the KJ on chassis stands, so perhaps that caused more fluid to drain from the torque converter?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I just did mine yesterday. Transmission and diff service. Took it to a local transmission place. They did everything for $340. Transmission fluid, filter and flushed the lines. They also replaced the diff oil which he said to me was in dire need of replacement. Something was telling me to go and do it...
